This warden message is to alert U.S. citizens traveling to and residing in Burma that on the late morning of Thursday, September 25, the U.S. Embassy received reports that one or possibly two bombs exploded at the Rangoon City Hall. Subsequent unconfirmed reports indicated that two people were killed and seven were injured. The U.S. Embassy is investigating the incident.
There is no evidence that there is any specific threat to US citizens or US Government interests. However, American citizens are urged to avoid the area around City Hall at least for the remainder of the day. In addition, as the Embassy indicated in our September 23 warden message regarding the one-year anniversary of the crackdown on the September 2007 monk-led demonstrations, U.S. citizens are urged to exercise discretion when moving about and to avoid any visible military presence and any area cordoned off by security forces.
