This warden message is to inform American citizens that there have recently been large processions of monks in Rangoon and Mandalay, Burma, reciting traditional Buddhist chants for compassion and an end to the people’s suffering, often followed by crowds of Burmese citizen supporters. We have received no reports of arrests or violence related to these marches. Authorities thus far have not interfered with the processions, but have begun to restrict some areas of Rangoon from the monks’ movements. If the demonstrations continue to grow, the possibility of a harsh military reaction increases.
American citizens are reminded that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational or violent. U.S. citizens traveling or residing in Burma should remain vigilant about security at all times. Americans should strictly observe personal security precautions, be aware of their surroundings, and vary the routes and times of their daily activities. Americans in Burma should avoid large public gatherings and crowded public places, including any area cordoned off by security forces.
The Embassy encourages Americans in Burma, including short-term visitors, to register with the U.S. Embassy in Burma so that they can obtain updated information on travel and security within Burma.
