Sending Money in an Emergency

It is very easy for U.S. citizens to run out of cash while visiting Burma. There are no ATMs, Burmese businesses do not accept credit cards, and banks do not cash traveler’s checks. Western Union does not have a presence in Burma.

The Consular Office can help destitute U.S. citizens in Burma get access to cash through an Overseas Citizen Services (OCS) Trust. Friends or family may send funds through the U.S. Embassy in Rangoon using an OCS Trust, which is created specifically for the transfer. Click here for more information on establishing and using an OCS Trust.

All U.S. citizens that need to get access to more funds while in Burma must contact the Consular Office directly.
