The safety and wellbeing of United States citizens in Burma is the Consular Office’s primary concern. Consular Officers and staff are able to assist citizens in distress, citizens who are the victims of crime, and citizens who find themselves in other emergency situations. Emergency Services
Sending Money in an Emergency
When a U.S. citizen encounters an emergency financial situation abroad, the Department of State’s Office of Overseas Citizens Services (OCS) can establish a Trust account in the citizen's name in order to forward funds overseas. (more)
Destitution
Destitution of U.S. citizens commonly occurs in Burma due to the nonexistence of access to cash or credit in country. The Consular Office helps citizens in these situations by assisting friends or families at home to transfer money through the Embassy to the destitute citizen. Any destitute citizen should contact the Consular Office directly.
Arrest of U.S. citizens
Consular Officers can help ensure that arrested citizens have access to legal representation, and receive proper legal treatment under Burmese laws. If incarcerated, Consular Officers make every effort to routinely visit citizens in prison to monitor their heath, treatment, and proper access to legal representation. Victims of Crime
Consular Officers can assist victims of crime get medical attention if needed, initiate legal proceedings in Burma, file a police report, get access to funds if destitute, and secure onward travel. See a list of Burmese attorneys by clicking the link to the left titled "Legal Assistance".
Illness or Accidents
We can help citizens who need medical attention by providing a list of doctors and hospitals in Burma. In general, Burmese medical care is far below international or U.S. standards. Death
When a U.S. citizen dies in Burma, Consular Officers can help notify next-of-kin, repatriate the remains to the U.S., settle matters related to the deceased's estate, and issue a Report of Death. This document is vital in settling legal affairs on behalf of the deceased.
